Best ATVs for Beginners
Missing something in your life? Sometimes it’s difficult to find that one activity that’s going to help you get the experience you’ve been missing out on while still being practical and affordable. That’s why so many people turn to ATVs for their recreational thrills. But if this is your first time buying and riding a four wheeler, or 4 wheeler, or if you’re investing in your child’s first ATV, you’ll want to make sure you’re shopping with the right mindset and looking for the right things.

Choosing the Right ATV
You’ll want to be honest with yourself when it comes to finding the right quad. Don’t try to hit the ground running with the biggest, most powerful engine, as you might lose control fairly quickly. And really, the engine size is probably going to be the biggest deciding factor for you. You’ll want to start off fairly small, probably something under 600cc to begin with. This will probably be a bit much for children, but it can provide adults with the right amount of power to make the investment worth it without completely overwhelming you while you’re trying to figure out the controls. If you are buying for a child, consider getting a kid-sized ATV. These models often come with other features to make learning for a young learner a little easier, such as throttle limiters and automatic transmission.
Beyond that, you’ll probably be looking at buying factors that would be true for any level of ATV experience. Think about where you’re going to take your four wheeler and make sure the models you’re looking at will accommodate this terrain. This will probably mostly affect the kind of tires you get and maybe a few other features. Consider how much storage you’ll need and whether you’ll need your quad to double as a workhorse. Let your dealer know of these preferences and needs so they can make sure to find you the right model for you.
Brands to Look For
When it comes to finding the right brand, your first ATV should probably stick to the big names, like Can-Am® or Yamaha. Each of these brands has youth models if you’re looking for something for your kid, but they also have great options for novices over the age of 18. This can include those manageable engine sizes we were talking about, as well as other great features to help make learning to ride a four wheeler much easier for you. This will also mean a wide range of ATV styles, from the more recreational and thrill machines to the ones that are built to get to work. Just make sure you know what you’re looking for so we can find you the right model for the right price.
Riding with the Right Gear
Once you have the right ATV, you’ll need to make sure you buy all the right gear as well. Start with the safety gear. You’ll need a good helmet, one that covers your entire head and face. You’ll also want to protect your eyes, so if your helmet doesn’t come with a face shield, make sure you invest in some goggles. The rest of your body needs to be properly protected as well, including long sleeves and pants, gloves, and sturdy boots. Even if you don’t expect to do anything too taxing at first, you’ll want to completely suit up for every ride, so get this gear together before you start the engine for the first time.
Hopefully this gives you a place to start, but we understand that buying your first ATV is probably going to be filled with questions and concerns.
