Can-Am History

To get into the Can-Am history, we have to go back all the way to 1942 when J. A. Bombardier founded the company that would eventually become Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP). Starting with conquering the snow, BRP eventually went on to become one of the most innovative and influential names on the market.

The name Can-Am originally was used to promote their motocross bikes, but in the late 1990s, they moved away from that market and looked at ATVs. Their first innovation was applying the TTI rear suspension to an ATV frame. In 2002, the first manufacturer-approved ATV for two people rolled out of the factory, further solidifying their presence in the quad market.

The next major change came in 2010 when Can-Am released the Commander, their first side-by-side and one of the more versatile models on the market, sporting an 85 hp Rotax 1000 V-Twin engine. They later released the Maverick as a sportier counterpart to the more utility oriented Commander. And that’s just the beginning. There are lots of off-road and even some roadster vehicles under the name Can-Am and they’re all ready to go the distance.

Narrowing Down your Options

Picking out the right Can-Am vehicle can be a little tough, but it all depends on what you need. Most of these models are divided by sport and recreational use and utility use. In other words, you’ll need to decide if you’ll mostly use your machine for weekend fun on the trails or if you need it to help you accomplish projects around your property. Or, if you want to take things a step further, you might be into racing, in which case you’ll want to looks more closely at those extreme sport models.

You’ll also want to consider whether you’ll want an ATV or a side-by-side. ATVs tend to be a little more agile, but side-by-sides can usually accommodate more people. In the case of side-by-sides, you can also usually get more towing power for those looking for workhorses. It’s best to make a list of priorities to bring to your dealer so they can help you narrow down your options.
