Initial Inspection

You can start by walking around your motorcycle and fully examining the exterior. You should be looking for any noticeable damage that you might have missed when you first stored it. Sometimes, damage can occur during storage. Whatever the case may be, you’ll want to address any possible issues prior to hitting the road again. Keep in mind that one small underperforming part on your bike can become a much bigger problem when you’re out riding.

Examine Tires & Brakes

The tires on your motorcycle hold up your vehicle and support you on the highway, so it’s critical that they’re in good condition. You should never under any circumstances ride on tires that are obviously worn down. You could end up suffering a blowout at high speeds, which is very dangerous. A tire pressure gauge will come in handy, so you should always have one around. Check the pressure in both tires and make sure they’re at the recommended level of the manufacturer, which can be found in the owner’s manual.

While you’re at it, examine the tread for uneven or excessive wear. Additionally, check for tears in the sidewall and any embedded objects. Address any repairs or replacements as needed. It might cost a bit of money, but it’ll be worth it to have solid, reliable tires to ride on. If you need assistance, don’t hesitate to contact the service department at Crossroad Powersports.

Test your brakes to ensure they’re in good shape. Take it around the block in a low traffic area to test the responsiveness. Roll out of the driveway slowly and give yourself ample room before the next stop sign to gently engage the brakes. Apply pressure steadily until you reach a stop. There might be squeaking due to dust, but if there’s slipping or grinding, you’ll need to have it looked at by a professional.

Check Fluids

Next, you need to check the vital fluid levels and see if any of them need replacing. Start by checking the engine fluid. You most likely changed the oil prior to winter storage to prevent corrosion and condensation buildup, but you’ll still need to check the condition it’s in. Take out the dipstick, wipe it off, re-insert it, then remove it and check to see if it falls on the right spot. Make sure you also check the condition of the oil. It should be a golden, translucent color. If it’s black or sludgy, it needs to be replaced. Otherwise, top it off so it’s full and you’re good to go.

Go ahead and check your brake fluid while your bike is fully upright. If you have a front and a rear reservoir, don’t forget to address both of them. Last but not least, check the transmission fluid just as you did with the engine oil.
