Dirt Bike Care & Maintenance
Your dirt bike is rugged and tough, designed to withstand hours of hard riding over challenging and rough terrain, but that doesn’t mean you don’t have to maintain it. Caring for your dirt bike ensures that it will function properly when you need it to and that it will remain safe to operate, lasting you for years to come.
So what do you need to do to take care of your dirt bike? Follow these simple steps to tune up your bike and keep it running.
Check Tires
The tires on your dirt bike will take a beating with regular rides, so you need to keep an eye on their overall condition. Use a tire-pressure gauge to check the pressure of each tire and keep them aired up to the psi levels specified in your owner’s manual. Watch for embedded objects, worn treads, and cracks in the sidewall that could merit repair or replacement.
Adjust Chains
After hours of hard riding, your dirt bike’s chains will be dirty and probably become loose. Clean them regularly when you clean the whole bike to remove damaging dirt and debris. Lubricate the chains as well and check their tension: you want the chains to be just right, neither too loose nor too tight.
Replenish or Change Fluids
Your dirt bike’s engine runs on several fluids to keep the bike running. Regular oil changes should be a part of your maintenance routine, as should inspections and top-ups of brake fluid and coolant. Always keep your gas tank full of fresh fuel as well and make sure to fill up your tank before a long ride.
Clean Air Filter
The air filter on your dirt bike is liable to get pretty dirty in the conditions you ride in, so you’ll need to clean it with a spray-on cleaner and coat it with fresh filter oil when it’s dry. Replace the air filter as often as is recommended in the owner’s manual.
Keep Your Dirt Bike Clean
Finally, it’s helpful to wash your dirt bike on a regular basis. Rinsing it after a muddy ride is a good idea; giving it a thorough wash is even better. Allowing dirt and grime to settle in every nook and cranny can result in damage becoming hidden from your view, and it can even cause corrosion over time. While washing your dirt bike, you can further inspect it and make note of any issues you need to address.
