No matter how experienced you are at riding your beloved quad, you may still find yourself stuck in the muck. Whether it’s a sticky patch on your farm that you weren’t anticipating or a washed-out portion of the local off-roading trail that’s had a bit too much rain, your ATV can become mired very easily, and it can be hard to get it free again. Here are some strategies you can employ to free your four-wheeler.

1. Use Your Winch

If you’re riding with someone else on their own ATV, attach your ATV winch to the front of your vehicle. Your companion can then use their ATV and winch to try to pull your quad out of the mud.

2. Make an Anchor

If you’re alone or if you need some more help, you can try using an anchor. Always pack a small steel rod with an eyebolt welded to it with you on your off-roading trips. You can stick this deep into some drier and higher ground, then attach your winch and ATV to it to try to pull yourself out.

3. Use a Shovel

If you pack a small foldable shovel with you, this tool can be employed to dig out the mud from around the wheels of your quad so that you may be able to simply drive out of the spot you’re in.
