Your utility terrain vehicle (UTV, also called a side-by-side or SxS) is a reliable workhorse and a fun way to go off-road riding with family and friends. However, this vehicle can only perform well if you keep it maintained. Here are some of the most basic UTV maintenance tasks you can easily do at home to ensure that your side-by-side doesn’t fall into disrepair.

Read Your Owner’s Manual

The owner’s manual that came with your UTV should be stored in an easily accessible location for frequent reference. This guide provides you with product recommendations and maintenance suggestions from the manufacturer, so it’s an invaluable resource for maintaining your UTV.

Check Tires

All your UTV tires need to be aired up and examined regularly. Check for signs of wear or damage, including sidewall cracks and balding treads, that might merit replacement or repair. Use a tire-pressure gauge and an air compressor to keep your tires properly inflated. Never ride on bad tires and always carry a spare tire with you on your trips.

Change or Replenish Fluids

The fluids in your UTV will need to be changed or topped off on a regular basis. Oil changes should happen according to the schedule in your owner’s manual and you’ll want to change the filter at the same time. Always make sure your tank has plenty of fresh, clean fuel in it as well. Check the coolant levels in your UTV’s engine often and top off coolant as needed.
