While it’s ideal that you ride your motorcycle during daylight hours for the best visibility and safest ride possible, it’s not always going to be possible. Sometimes you’re just going to have to ride at night. It’s important as a motorcyclist to take precautions to ensure your own safety, so here are some tips on how to ride your motorcycle after the sun goes down.

1. Be Visible

It’s very hard to be seen if you’re on a small vehicle and wearing all-black and don’t have bright lights. Make sure that you’re doing everything you can to stand out from the darkness. Wear high-visibility riding gear in bright colors or white. If you want, you can add reflective tape to your bike, your helmet, and your motorcycle jacket. Adding more lighting to your motorcycle can also help you to be seen, as can swapping out lights for brighter LEDs.

2. Ride Defensively

Night drivers are more likely to suffer from fatigue and their reaction times may be slowed. Also, a lot of night drivers may unfortunately be under the influence of alcohol, particularly when bars close, so you have to be vigilant. If you see a car near you starting to swerve, fall several paces behind them and get in a different lane. Always look for places you can move out of the way, such as a road shoulder or exit lane or even a grass median, so that you don’t get hit.
