Riding on Trails With Your Dirt Bike
Dirt bikes, also known as off-road motorcycles, are a popular choice with outdoorsy sorts. There are many ways you can ride your dirt bike. You can take it out on your property, you can go out to a mudding area, or you can tackle a local nature trail with it. It’s important that you ride your off-road bike in a respectful manner when you’re on a trail. Here’s what to know.
Wear the Right Gear
To keep yourself safe, you should always gear up when riding your off-road motorcycle on a trail. A well-fitting helmet with a face mask or goggles is necessary, as are riding gloves and boots and close-fitting clothes that protect your skin.
Stay on Track & Be Respectful
Venturing into restricted or off-limits areas is one way that people get themselves into trouble when riding on trails with their off-road bike. Follow all posted signage for speed limits, out-of-bounds areas, and other warnings. Make sure you slow down if you see an animal, a hiker, or a stopped bike up ahead, and give them a wide berth (or stop to help).
Sit Correctly
Dirt bikes have a somewhat unique riding position that you’ll need to adopt to ride trails safely. You should sit forward on the bike and lean over the front to keep your off-road motorcycle stable. Your elbows should extend out to your sides, while your knees need to draw in close to the bike to keep you in place. When taking a corner, it can help to stick out a leg towards your front wheel.
